Should I refrigerate tomatoes, potatoes and onions?
Generally no. Tomatoes lose flavour and go mealy in the fridge; potatoes, onions and garlic prefer a cool, dark, dry cupboard. The tool shows where each keeps longest, but for these the pantry usually wins on taste too.
Does the freezer always win because it lasts longest?
Not always. The freezer usually gives the longest shelf life, but freezing changes the texture of some foods — lettuce, cucumber and whole eggs, for example. Use it for foods you'll cook later rather than eat raw.
Where should I keep bread?
For a day or two, the counter is fine. To keep it longer without staling, freeze it — bread keeps for weeks frozen and toasts straight from the freezer. The fridge actually stales bread faster.
